Smoke Forces Tenants To Evacuate Building

An overloaded basement incinerator that sent smoke to the top floors forced tenants Sun-day afternoon to evacuate the Lawrence Apartments building off West Drive.

Fire Chief Richard McKee, 16 firemen and three fire trucks responded to a 1:46 call. The tall building was evacuated while firemen put out the incinerator fire and cleared away smoke from the top floors. There was no damage.
